The Loneliness Epidemic: How Social Connection & Dance Boost Your Health

Updated: Mar 19

Loneliness is an epidemic that is causing significant health risks in adults. Over 40% of Americans suffer from loneliness. Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has long warned about the dangers of loneliness. "Social connection is as fundamental to our mental and physical health as food, water, and sleep," Murthy stated.

According to multiple studies, loneliness increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, even early death. Loneliness also causes a myriad of cognitive disorders, among these are depression, anxiety, and early onset dementia.

Why is this happening? One reason, which you probably guessed, is technology. While technology has made connecting easier in some ways, it has also contributed to a growing sense of isolation. The pandemic only amplified this problem, as social distancing mandates kept people physically apart for extended periods.

That mandate has been lifted and it's time to connect! It's not common for bi-partisan agreement in today's political climate, but policymakers across party lines, along with doctors and researchers agree on one thing: Social connection is essential for well-being!

Here’s a tip from Bad Idea Dating, loneliness has an antidote, and it’s as fun as it is effective! There’s an activity that not only promotes social interaction but also fights loneliness like kryptonite fights Superman: Dancing! The Harvard Medical School reported that one of the best ways to improve both cognitive and physical health is to dance!! Science backs it, and your soul craves it, dancing not only lifts your spirits but strengthens your brain and body. So turn up the music, let loose, and bust a move!
